Two weeks into the job, without a cell phone or name badge I found myself sitting in the crisis unit at 11:00pm for the second time in one week. I sat in the waiting room with a 10 year-old client, waiting for him to be admitted to the psychiatric program. This was the same client I had brought in the week prior, and was told by my agency he would have to fail out of all options before he got the desperate care he needed. We sat together sewing a pillow in the waiting room. As they admitted him he gave me the pillow. He couldn’t take it into the unit and he asked me to keep it safe until he got out. My heart was broken. I could not bear to watch HELPLESSLY as THE SYSTEM FAILED A CHILD again and again. I vowed that night to be the change I desired in others.
